The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is replacing the east spans of the Bay Bridge from Oakland to Yerba Buena Island. To accomplish this, portions of the existing Bay Bridge must be removed and eastbound and westbound traffic shifted off the existing structure and onto a temporary detour structure (Temporary Bypass Structure- TBS). Once the TBS project is operational, it will create the room needed for the new Bay Bridge to enter the tunnel in its current alignment.
